How reliably can part distortion be predicted with FCM when turning turbine disks?

Challenge and Motivation

  • Distortion caused by residual stresses (RS) is a major challenge in the manufacturing of thin-walled turbine discs from high-temperature materials.
  • A predictive method based on the Finite Cell Method (FCM) has been developed, but the confidence in simulation results must be increased.

Objective

  • Systematically validated Simulation code
  • Develop best practice guidelines for the reliable prediction of distortion caused by residual stresses in turbine disks.
